Chapter 11

The quarters assigned to Reece would have put a monk’s room to shame. A rolled up leather tarp to serve as a bed, one furlon plastic carton for both storage and sitting on and that was the sum total of her new lodgings. There was a metal door and one narrow window that looked out onto a dusty courtyard where the heat from the blazing sun seemed to bounce right into her face if she dared to peer outside.

A vision of floating in a deep, fresh-water pool complete with gushing waterfall and shaded by tall, green thronged palm trees tormented her. Out of the many things she missed about Earth, that experience was up there with the best of them. She tugged at her shirt and her shoulders slumped. Highly resistant to dirt and body sweat, nevertheless her flight clothes felt grimy and stiff against her skin. What she wouldn’t do for a bout in a cleansing tube about now.

Turning away from the window and the cheerless vista beyond, Reece glanced at her holdall. Time to stop procrastinating. And yet, her eyes closed as her thoughts returned yet again like magnetised metal to Ulrac.

She was wasting far too much of her time and energy on him. If she wasn’t fantasising about a long, tantalising bout of healthy sex with him, she was busy wondering what made him tick. Even worse, those dumb ideas about taking away his inner pain kept popping into her head.

So they’d had help escaping from Isla. Of course they would have had to, for how could they have managed it with their limited knowledge of this world? Not to mention the condition of some of the women, barely conscious, struggling with pain and injuries inflicted by the research on their bodies. And the horror strangling their minds. Too thankful at the time to think about it, Reece had taken it at face value when Dell had whispered her plan in her ear.

If this was the truth, and Reece knew with every atom of her body it was true, then Dell and Ulrac must have known each other. Who had made the first contact? Dell? Had she given him sexual favours in exchange for help?

No, that didn’t ring true with the warrior Reece had come to know over the past few weeks. This guy lived for his honour. Torn between his vows of duty, his desire to be worthy in his father’s eye and the dictates of his conscience, he’d made a decision that could have well seen his days ended facing a firing squad. And should his father learn of his actions he’d no doubt lose all hope of reconciliation with his father.

He was a true hero.

How many had he saved? From his words, Reece suspected, it had been more than their group, which meant there were other Earth women living and hiding somewhere in the Seven Galaxies.

If Kondo had known Ulrac’s involvement that explained, in part, why he’d been keen to aid the Darkon’s escape from Verrilous.
